Film in Slovenia

The Slovenian professional film production began in 1948 with the film On Our Own Land by the director France Štiglic. Until 1995, when the Slovenian Film Fund – the forerunner of the Slovenian Film Centre – was established, 130 feature films were made.

Film Fund was the first institution of its kind in the territory of the former Yugoslavia, and with it the planning and co‑financing of Slovenian films was transferred from the Ministry of Culture to an independent expert institution. During these years independent film producers became managers of film production, in accordance with the European model. The period between 1995 and 2015 also represents the rebirth of Slovenian film and its increasing importance in the landscape of the world film and especially European film.
