Izola among the European youth film capitals for the third time in a row

European Day and the Young Film Audience Award invite teenagers to Izola on the first Sunday in May

Sunday, 3 May, is the third time that Otok, a cultural organisation for the development of film culture, is organising a film day in the Odeon Art Cinema. The event is intended for teenagers between 12 and 14 years of age from the whole of Slovenia. This free day‑long event also includes moderated discussions and creative workshops apart from the screening of three European youth films. Thus Izola – a film town with a long tradition – is once again warming up for the diverse events that are to come in the following months.

At the European Day of the Young Film Audience the primary school pupils of the final three years will have the opportunity to become members of a film jury and vote for the winner, which will receive the European Film Academy Young Audience Award. The event in which as many as 25 European cities are participating this year (among others also Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul and London) will reach its peak during the video conference when two representatives of the young jurors will communicate the results of the voting to the German city of Erfurt.

This year's nominees for the Young Audience Award are: My Skinny Sister (Min lilla syster, Sanna Lenken, Sweden/Germany, 2015, 95 min), The Invisible Boy (Il ragazzo invisibile, Gabriele Salvatores, Italy, 2014, 100 min) and You're Ugly Too (Mark Noonan, Ireland, 2015, 79 min).

European Day and the Young Film Audience Award is an event created as an initiative of the European Film Academy, a renowned all‑European association for the promotion of high‑quality film. It has been organised since 2012. The Otok institute prepared it for the first time in the very following year, thus putting Izola on the map of the European film events that are also intended for teenagers.
The goal of this extraordinary European film education project is to shape independent and critical users of the contemporary media, who will contribute to the betterment of the social environment in the decades to come. Thus film as the most popular and communicative branch of the arts will assume the role of a "media instructor", transforming the young from passive viewers into active participants at moderated discussions and creative workshops.

The event is being organised in cooperation with the Slovenian Film Centre and the Izola Centre for Culture, Sport and Events. It is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Municipality of Izola.

European Day and the Young Film Audience Award represents an introduction to the film events for children, youth and families, which are to follow in Izola just before the beginning of summer. In the beginning of June Submarine – Island for Kids, a film education programme organised by the Otok institute featuring selected film screenings and a creative accompanying programme, will take place in the most film‑oriented town on the Coast for the third time.
