Seduce me - the Slovenian Oscar candidate

26. September 2014
This year's Slovenian candidate for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film is the film Seduce Me by Marko Šantić

This drama produced by TV Slovenia, which received the Vesna Award for Best Direction last year, is also coming to the cinemas in September. It was selected by the expert jury consisting of Radovan Mišić (producer), Darko Herič (director of photography), Matija Šturm (producer), Alenka Nahtigal (makeup designer), Miloš Kalusek (editor), Matjaž Zajec (film editor) and Rok Biček (director). The jury chose among four films that applied: besides Šantić's film also Inferno by the director Vinko Möderndorfer, Going Our Way by Miha Hočevar and Lost to be Found by Tomaž Šneberger.

In his feature debut Marko Šantić portrays young people who find their only haven in each other's company, while the fate frequently pulls them apart.

The film tells a story about a 19 year‑old young man and his discovery of his family's past, lack of family security, as well as questions of loneliness and betrayal. Luka (Janko Mandić) leaves the youth home, his only refuge where he has lived for the last nine years. He wants to discover where his father is buried. At work he falls in love with a vivacious girl Ajda (Nina Rakovec).

While he searches for answers about his past, which leads him to the revelation of a shocking family secret, Luka realises that his love for Ajda is his only sanctuary. The film about love and hatred, sins of the past and hope for a better future is based on the motives from the novel Gosposka, mater si ozka by Orlando Uršič.

Besides the main actors the film also features Nataša Barbara Gračner, Peter Musevski, Dario Varga, Primož Pirnat and Gregor Zorc. The film, which has already won multiple awards, had its world premiere on the 16 October 2013 at the festival in Warsaw, where it also received a special jury mention.
