Film Journeys in November

In November the Slovenian films are heading to
19 international film festivals in the European and Asian countries. On their journey across the world will be heading: Blind Spot, The Guardian of the Frontier, Headnoise, Bread and Milk, Ljubljana, Sweet Dreams, F, Perk and Glazier Blues. The second feature film by Andrej Kosak, Headnoise, had its international premiere in Germany, where it was shown in the competition programme of the 16th International Film Festival in Braunschweig (5 November to 10 November). The film Sweet Dreams by Saso Podgorsek was also among the ten films in the competition section, while Bread And Milk by Jan Cvitkovic was shown in the International Cinema section. Headnoise also qualified for the competition programme of the 3rd Mediterranean Film Festival in Köln (6 to 15 December). At this festival Guardian of the Frontier and Bread And Milk are going to be shown out of the competition program. Guardian of the Frontier by Maja Weiss is going to have its Italian premiere at the Medfilm festival in Rome, where it is going to appear in the competition program. The people of Rome will also be able to see Bread And Milk and Janja Glogovac’s short film F between 18 and 25 November. Bread and Milk is going to be presented to the Indian audience for the first time. First it is to be shown at the festival International Forum of New Cinematography in Calcutta (10 to 17 November) and then also at the5th International Film Festival in Mumbai (21 to 28 November) where it is going to be shown at the World Cinema section. Bread and Milk is also going to be shown in Spain at the festival where Sweet Dreams by Saso Podgorsek received the Gold Palm last year. At this year’s twenty-third Mostri de Valencia (27 November to 4 December) Bread And Milk is going to compete for this award. Apart from Braunschewig, Köln and Rome, three Slovenian films are to be shown also at the 4th International Film Festival in Bratislava, Slovakia (29 November and 7 December). Blind Spot by Hanna A. W. Slak is going to appear in the competition section, while Guardian of the Frontier and Ljubljana are to be shown in the European Film section. In November Blind Spot is going to participate in the competition programme of the Spanish festival L’Alternativa 2002, 9th Independent Film Festival in Barcelona (15 to 23 November). Its Slovenian premiere is scheduled for the 13th Ljubljana International Film Festival LIFFE (11 to 24 November), when it is going to compete in the Perspectives section for the “Vodomec” award, won by Bread And Milk last year. Blind Spot has qualified for the 7th Pusan International Film Festival in Korea (14 to 23 November), where it is going to be shown in the World Cinema section. Blind Spot is also going to compete in Greece at the 43th International Film Festival in the city of Thessaloniki (8 to 17 November). The Greek audience is also going to be able to see the film Ljubljana by Igor Sterk; it is going to be shown in The Balkans Overview section. Ljubljana is going to continue its journey in Spain; more specifically, it is going to appear at the 7th Ourense International Film Festival (9 to 16 November). Last year Podgorsek’s Sweet Dreams were shown at this festival. In the days from 23 November to 8 December Ljubljana is also going to be shown in Estonia, at the Black Nights Film Festival taking place in Tallinn. Together with Ljubljana Guardian of the Frontier by Maja Weiss is going to be shown. The Slovenian colours were already represented there last year by Bread And Milk, Ode to the Poet and Sweet Dreams. Guardian of the Frontier is going to be shown in Germany at the 12th International Film Festival Verzaubert 2002. The festival is scheduled to take place from 20 November to 11 December in five different cities: München, Frankfurt, Köln, Berlin and Hamburg. The short animated film PERK by Dusan Kastelic is also sailing the seas of the festivals with unrelenting determination. At the moment it is a part of the competition program of the International Animated Film Festival in Utrecht, Netherlands. In Bilbao, Spain, it is going to be shown between 25 to 30 November at the 44th International Festival of Documentaries and Short Films. Last year Glazier Blues had a guest appearance at this festival. We are going to stay in Spain some more – the Slovenian short films Perk and Glazier Blues are participating at the International Short Films Festival in Badalona for the first time. Perk is going to compete in the north of Ireland in Derry at the Budweiser Foyle Film Festival. Glazier Blues by Harry Rag is also going to be shown in France at the 22nd International Film Festival in Amiens. It is going to appear from 8 November to 17 November in the Young European Authors section. November has been a very successful month for Slovenian films.
  • In the German Braunschweig Sweet Dreams received the first prize: the “Heinrich” Award worth 10.000 Euros.
  • At the festival in Cottbus Blind Spot received two awards: the Don Quixote Award of the International Cinematography Clubs Association – FICC and the Ecumenical jury award.
  • At the festival of short film in Uppsala Glazier Blues got a special jury acknowledgement.
  • And one nomination for the end: Guardian of the Frontier is nominated in the European Discovery 2002 – The Fassbinder Award category. It is the first Slovenian film nominated for this award.
