Winter Journeys of Slovenian Films at the Festivals Abroad

31. March 2005
Two big film festivals, Rotterdam and Berlin, where us Slovenians have once again brought attention to ourselves, played a decisive role in the first quarter of the year.

The overview of the first three months is very delightful. We received as many as 5 awards:
- the award for best female role for Polona Juh in the film Beneath Her Window in Moscow
- the special jury award for the film Suburbs at the festival in the French Annonay
- and 3 awards for the co-production Red Coloured Grey Truck (2 in Trieste and 1 in Sofia)

Where did all the journeys take our films?

The Beezes: Cherries has just returned from a long voyage around Italy (Gli anni in tasca, Bologna), Belgium (24. Anima festival) and USA (BAMKids festival).

Child in Time, the new short film by Maja Weiss, had its premiere in the competition program of short films at the 55th Berlinale and thus started its tour of the festivals.

Ruins had its international premiere at the prestigious international film festival in Rotterdam in the Cinema of the World: Time and Tide section, while Heart is a Piece of Meat by Cvitkovič appeared among short films. The international premiere of Ruins in Rotterdam made possible a very good review of the film in Variety. At this moment Ruins is preparing for the Italian Lecce and the American Minneapolis.

In January Suburbs, together with the short film Heart is a Piece of Meat, visited the film festival in Trieste and the international film festival Possible in Barcelona, Spain.
In February, after its award in the French city of Annonay and the projection at the Berlin film market, Suburbs travelled to the EU Festival in Chicago together with Rustling Landscapes at the invitation of the Chicago Art Institute.
In March it was invited to the competition program of the 9th International Film Festival in Sofia, where it was in good company with our co-production film Red Coloured Grey Truck.

In Sofia in the Balkan Films Showcase section Beneath Her Window, which journeyed around half the world in the first three months, was also presented. In January it was invited into the competition program of the international film festival Pune in India, immediately after that to the American Palm Springs, and, last but not least, to Prague to the EU Festival. In the end of January it went to Switzerland to the Solothurner International Film Festival together with Atorsion and Cheese And Jam. When in March Beneath Her Window returned from the festival in Belgrade, it was already expected in the USA at the international festival in Cleveland. From North America it travelled southwards to Argentina to the 20th Mar del Plata Festival, where the director Metod Pevec also travelled. Its last journey in March brought the film an award: in Moscow, at the "Faces of Love" festival, the actress Polona Juh received the award for best female role.

Besides the aforementioned festival in Switzerland, Cheese And Jam together with Spare Parts went to Heidelberg, Germany, to the so called "Mediterranean Film Day", which the city of Heidelberg organizes together with the "Mediterranean Film Festival" from Montpellier. Currently Cheese And Jam represents Slovenia at the most famous Moroccan film festival in Tetouan.

In the Mountains is still successfully gaining festival mileage. From the 28th International Film Festival in Göteborg in Sweden it went overseas to the United States – to California to the Tiburon International Film Festival, and to Washington to Spokane festival.
