In 1940, just before the outbreak of war, the young Marjan lives a carefree life with his gang in the Zelena Jama district of Ljubljana, with all the problems of his age. He is naively in love with Lenka, but he also starts to discover sex...
With the Italian occupation, the circumstances change, the gang falls apart, with some taking part in the resistance and the others siding with the national collaborationists. Marjan remains non-aligned. Italy surrenders and the Germans march in town.
Milena, a lady of easy virtue, who has good connections with the German officers, seduces him and Marjan loses his innocence.
The war ends and the partisans win. The new authority through a misunderstanding also imprisons Marjan.
